The Best Fjord Viewpoints in the World
A fjord is a glacially-carved sea inlet, typically with vertical walls plunging directly into deep water. They occur on every continent that had Pleistocene ice; Norway, Greenland, Chile, New Zealand, and Canada host the most-photographed examples. These ten cover the global fjord canon.
1. Stegastein, Aurlandsfjord, Norway — 650 m
A 30-metre cantilevered platform on the Snow Road above the Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord (Norway's longest at 205 km). Drive-in May to October.
2. Geirangerfjord from Dalsnibba, Norway — 1,476 m
The toll road to Dalsnibba ends at a summit platform looking south into the full depth of the UNESCO Geirangerfjord. May to early October.
3. Milford Sound from Mitre Peak Lookout, New Zealand — 1,683 m
Mitre Peak, the iconic vertical pyramid rising directly from Milford Sound, is best photographed from the foreshore (sea level). For elevated views, the Mackinnon Pass on the Milford Track (1,154 m).
4. Doubtful Sound, New Zealand — sea level + 200 m
The longer, deeper, less-visited New Zealand sound. Access by boat tour from Manapouri. The viewpoint at the Wilmot Pass crossing (671 m) on the road to the sound's inland end gives the first overview.
5. Saguenay Fjord, Quebec, Canada — 200 m
The Saguenay is a 100-kilometre fjord in Quebec, the only fjord on the eastern seaboard of North America. Viewpoints at Cap Trinité (the "Trinity Cape") above the fjord.
6. Lysefjord from Preikestolen, Norway — 604 m
The flat cliff platform 604 metres above the Lysefjord, with a 25x25-metre horizontal rock surface. Eight-kilometre return hike. Norway's most-visited natural landmark.
7. Hardangerfjord from Trolltunga, Norway — 700 m
The horizontal ledge 700 metres above Lake Ringedal, a hydroelectric reservoir on the Hardangerfjord. 28-km return hike. Strenuous.
8. Sognefjord from Vikafjellet road, Norway — 1,000 m
The mountain road between Vik and Voss climbs to 1,000 metres with multiple roadside pullouts looking down into the Sognefjord. Open late May to October.
9. Chilean Patagonia from Cerro Castillo viewpoint — 1,720 m
The Chilean fjordlands south of Puerto Montt are best viewed from elevated points on land or from cruise ships in the channels. The Cerro Castillo and Cerro Torre regions provide the most accessible elevated fjord views.
10. Howe Sound from Sea-to-Sky Gondola, Canada — 850 m
A short fjord at the head of the Pacific just north of Vancouver, viewed from the Sea-to-Sky Gondola summit station with the suspension-bridge walkway. The view south down Howe Sound to Vancouver and the Strait of Georgia.
