The Best Sunrise Hikes Worldwide
A sunrise hike requires three things: a route safe enough to walk in the dark with a headlamp, a destination east-facing enough to see the actual sunrise (not just dawn light), and an exit strategy when temperatures crash before the sun rises. These ten are sufficiently iconic to attract hundreds of pilgrims on the right mornings.
1. Haleakalā Summit, Maui, Hawaii — 3,055 m
The dormant volcano summit drives up; no hiking required, but reservations are mandatory for sunrise. Crater rim panorama with the sun rising directly out of the Pacific below. Temperatures below freezing at the summit even in tropical July.
2. Adam's Peak (Sri Pada), Sri Lanka — 2,243 m
The 5,500-step night-climb pilgrim route, traditionally lit by oil lamps during pilgrimage season (December-April). Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, and Muslims all consider the summit sacred. The shadow of the cone is cast westward at sunrise.
3. Mount Bromo Sea of Sand, Indonesia — 2,329 m
The crater rim of Bromo and the surrounding "Sea of Sand" caldera at sunrise. Reached by 4x4 from Cemoro Lawang in the dark, then short climb. The view east into the active volcano and west across the caldera at first light.
4. Cadair Idris from Minffordd Path, Wales — 893 m
A 5-km steep ascent to Llyn Cau, then on to the summit Penygadair. The east-facing summit looks across to the Welsh borderlands at sunrise. Start 3 hours before sunrise from the Minffordd car park.
5. Reinebringen, Lofoten, Norway — 442 m
Arctic summer means the sun barely sets between mid-May and late July; the "sunrise" is at 1-3 a.m. local time depending on date. The summit views the entire Reine archipelago in flat northern light.
6. Sigiriya Rock, Sri Lanka — 200 m
A 200-metre rock fortress in the central Sri Lankan plain. The 1,200-step climb takes 90 minutes; start before 5 a.m. to be at the summit at sunrise. The eastward view over the surrounding jungle and lakes.
7. Pen y Fan from Cwm Llwch, Wales — 886 m
The east-facing summit of the highest peak in southern Britain. Two-hour ascent from Storey Arms car park in the dark with headlamps. Best in late spring and early autumn when sunrise is at workable times (5-6 a.m.).
8. Mount Batur, Bali, Indonesia — 1,717 m
A two-hour pre-dawn ascent to the active volcano rim. Guides mandatory. At the summit, breakfast cooked on the volcano's steam vents, and a sunrise view east over Mount Agung and the sea beyond.
9. Roys Peak, Wanaka, New Zealand — 1,578 m
The classic Lake Wanaka viewpoint hike, 16 km return, 1,200 m gain. The east-facing summit looks back over Lake Wanaka and the Southern Alps. Best between November and March when the trail is snow-free.
10. Mount Sinai, Egypt — 2,285 m
The traditional pilgrim site for Christians and Jews. The Camel Path ascent (3-4 hours) starts in the night from St. Catherine's Monastery (1,500 m). Summit Greek Orthodox chapel and a small mosque mark the top.
