The Best Sunset Viewpoints in Europe
A sunset viewpoint needs three things: an unobstructed view to the west, foreground interest, and enough elevation that the last light hits visibly. These ten European viewpoints meet all three, and most have established infrastructure (terraces, paths) so they remain comfortable for the hour or two on either side of golden hour.
1. Oia, Santorini, Greece — 70 m
The defining European sunset: white-and-blue cycladic architecture silhouetted against the western caldera. Crowds gather an hour before sunset on the castle wall in Oia village. The light passes through the volcanic caldera dust, often producing dramatic colours.
2. Monte Capanne, Elba, Italy — 1,019 m
The summit of Elba island, reached by open-basket cable car. The view west looks over the Tyrrhenian Sea toward Corsica, with the island in silhouette below. The cable car last descent times move with the seasons.
3. Praiano cliff-path, Amalfi Coast, Italy — 200 m
The SS163 between Praiano and Positano has multiple roadside pullouts facing west into the Capri-direction sunset. The cliff coastline glows orange in the last 15 minutes.
4. Mýrdalsjökull west cliff, Iceland — 200 m
The western cliffs of the Mýrdalsjökull glacier complex have a clear westward view over the Atlantic. In the winter shoulder seasons (March, October) sunset times allow normal evening visits; midsummer the sun barely sets.
5. Cabo de São Vicente, Portugal — 80 m
The southwesternmost point of continental Europe. Vertical 75-metre cliffs face directly into the Atlantic sunset. The 1846 lighthouse and a small café provide structure. Best from October to April.
6. Pulpit Rock, Norway — 604 m
The southeast-facing Preikestolen is a sunrise destination — for sunset, the rim of the Lysefjord canyon at the Sognekuten viewpoint catches the late western light. Drive plus short hike from Stavanger.
7. Cap Fréhel, Brittany, France — 70 m
The pink granite cliffs of Cap Fréhel face west across the bay of Saint-Brieuc. The 1701 lighthouse provides foreground. Open all year; very few visitors after the day-tour season.
8. Cliffs of Moher, Ireland — 214 m
The 8-kilometre cliffline faces west into the Atlantic. The southwesternmost of the cliff overlooks (Hag's Head) provides the most unobstructed sunset view. Sun-set timing varies by 4 hours between June and December.
9. Stykkishólmur lighthouse, Iceland — 30 m
A small lighthouse on a rock above the Snæfellsnes peninsula port town, with views west to the Snæfellsjökull glacier. Best in the long evenings of May-July when sunset extends well past 10 p.m.
10. Madeira's Cabo Girão, Portugal — 580 m
A glass-floored cliff terrace on Madeira's south coast, 580 metres above the Atlantic. The west-facing terrace catches the entire descending sun into the open Atlantic. Year-round access.
