Top 10 Viewpoints in the Pyrenees

The Pyrenees run 430 kilometres between the Atlantic and Mediterranean, separating France from Spain. Glacial cirques on the Spanish side, lush ridges on the French side, and the small principality of Andorra in the middle. These ten viewpoints cover the range from the Atlantic Basque country to the Mediterranean Costa Brava.

1. Pic du Midi de Bigorre — 2,877 m

The cable car summit observatory above La Mongie, France. 360-degree panorama with the central Pyrenees laid out south and the Pyrenees foreland north toward Toulouse. Year-round operation; the night-sky reserve makes this an astrotourism destination.

2. Cirque de Gavarnie — 1,400 m (rim 3,000 m)

The classic glacial amphitheatre with a 422-metre waterfall (Europe's tallest plunge). The viewing terrace at the Hôtellerie du Cirque is reached by 1.5 hours easy walk from Gavarnie village. UNESCO World Heritage.

3. Refugio de Goriz, Ordesa — 2,200 m

The base camp for the Monte Perdido (3,355 m) ascent, with a terrace overlooking the Ordesa valley and the Cilindro de Marboré. Three-hour walk from the Ordesa valley parking. Spanish UNESCO side of Gavarnie.

4. Pic du Carlit, French Catalonia — 2,921 m

A summit in the Carlit massif reached by a four-hour hike from Lake Bouillouses. Views east to the Mediterranean coast and west into the Spanish Cerdanya. Most-southern major Pyrenean summit on the French side.

5. Vall de Núria, Spanish Catalonia — 1,964 m

A mountain shrine reached only by the Cremallera rack railway from Ribes de Freser. The Núria valley sits at 2,000 metres surrounded by 2,800-metre peaks. The view from the upper sanctuary terrace looks across the cirque to the Puigmal.

6. Pic d'Estats, France-Spain border — 3,143 m

Highest peak of Catalonia, on the Andorra-France-Spain corner. Strenuous day hike from Estaon (Spain) or Soulcem (France). The summit panorama spans the eastern Pyrenees from Vall d'Aran to the Mediterranean.

7. Coma Pedrosa, Andorra — 2,942 m

Highest peak of Andorra. Five-hour return hike from Arinsal. The summit view east covers the entire principality and the Andorran ski areas; westward extends into Spain.

8. Pic d'Aneto, central Pyrenees — 3,404 m

Highest peak of the Pyrenees, with a glacial summit ridge. Climbed from the Renclusa hut via the Aneto glacier (rope and crampons required). The view from the summit takes in both sides of the central Pyrenees.

9. Cap de Creus, Empordà — 87 m

The eastern terminus of the Pyrenees, where the mountains drop into the Mediterranean. Drive-in lighthouse with views east over the Gulf of Lion and southwest into the Cap de Creus natural park. Dalí's home territory.

10. La Rhune, Basque Pyrenees — 905 m

The westernmost named peak in the Pyrenees, accessible by a small wooden rack railway from Sare. The summit looks west over the Atlantic Bay of Biscay and east toward the Basque pre-Pyrenees. Often shrouded in the Atlantic mist.
