Top 10 Viewpoints in Chile
Chile is essentially a 4,300 km ribbon of geography along the Pacific coast of South America. The country compresses Atacama desert, Mediterranean central valleys, dense southern forests, and the glaciers and granite of Patagonia into a strip rarely more than 200 km wide. Its viewpoints are correspondingly varied; the list below samples each region.
1. Mirador Las Torres, Torres del Paine
The classic viewpoint on the W trek in Patagonia, with three granite towers rising over a glacial lake. The hike up gains 1,000 m in 9 km. Dawn light is the canonical photograph; few sites in South America are more photographed.
2. Valle de la Luna sunset, Atacama
The Moon Valley near San Pedro de Atacama, with the Cordillera de la Sal lit by the setting sun. The Quebrada del Diablo viewpoint is the standard sunset position. Volcanoes Licancabur and Lascar visible to the east.
3. Valparaíso amphitheatre — Cerro Concepción
The Pacific port city of Valparaíso rises in steep hills around its bay. The viewpoint on Cerro Concepción gives the canonical city view, with painted houses, funiculars and the harbour below. Sunset is the most-photographed time.
4. Mirador Cuernos del Paine, Torres del Paine
The viewpoint on the south shore of Lake Pehoé in the same park. The Cuernos peaks rise from the far shore; the reflection in the lake is the canonical Paine shot. Best in calm dawn light.
5. Marble Caves viewpoint, General Carrera Lake
The Marble Caves on the Patagonian lake are best seen from a boat. The shoreline viewpoint at Puerto Río Tranquilo gives the broader lake panorama with the marble peninsula in the middle distance.
6. Geysers del Tatio sunrise, Atacama
The Tatio geyser field at 4,320 m altitude, with dozens of geysers active at dawn. The viewpoint above the field gives the overview shot. Temperatures often -10°C before sunrise.
7. Cajón del Maipo — Embalse El Yeso
The reservoir in the Cajón del Maipo gorge southeast of Santiago, at 2,500 m. The viewpoint above the dam gives a turquoise-water panorama against the Andean wall. A weekend Santiago favourite.
8. Mirador Naval, Easter Island
The viewpoint on Easter Island overlooking the Ahu Tongariki moai line and the Pacific. Best in dawn light when the silhouettes of fifteen moai are backlit. The most remote viewpoint on this list.
9. Pucón — Volcán Villarrica
The active Villarrica volcano above Pucón gives a near-perfect volcanic cone. Climbed in summer with guide and crampons; the crater rim views over central Chile are the reward.
10. Patagonian Carretera Austral — Cerro Castillo viewpoint
The viewpoint at the Cerro Castillo pass on Chile's southern highway, looking up at the basalt towers of Cerro Castillo. A less-crowded alternative to Torres del Paine, accessible from Coyhaique.
North-to-south thinking
Chile's geography rewards a single end-to-end itinerary. North to south means changing climates dramatically — Atacama dry and clear, central Chile Mediterranean, the lake district damp and green, Patagonia windy and unpredictable. Plan light layers and sun protection for every leg.
