Top 10 Viewpoints on the Amalfi Coast

The Amalfi Coast (Costiera Amalfitana) is a 50-kilometre strip of vertical coast in Campania, UNESCO-listed since 1997. Limestone cliffs drop directly into the Tyrrhenian Sea, with villages clinging to the slope. These ten viewpoints cover the full coast from Positano to Vietri.

1. Path of the Gods (Sentiero degli Dei) — 500-700 m

The classic ridge trail above Praiano and Positano, 7.8 km point-to-point. Limestone cliff terraces hundreds of metres above the sea, with the entire coast visible westward to Capri. The two trailheads are Bomerano (Agerola) and Nocelle. Best in spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October); summer heat is severe.

2. Villa Cimbrone Terrace of Infinity, Ravello — 365 m

The marble bust-lined terrace at Villa Cimbrone in Ravello cantilevers over the coastline 365 metres above the sea. The view south down the coast, with the Lattari mountains receding into haze, is the defining Amalfi image. Garden entry fee applies; best at golden hour.

3. Villa Rufolo, Ravello — 350 m

Lower than Cimbrone, the Villa Rufolo terraces look directly down the Maiori coast. Summer concert venue. The dome of the Annunziata church in Atrani is visible directly below.

4. Positano from Montepertuso — 350 m

The arched rock formation of Montepertuso ("pierced mountain") sits above the village of Positano, with a 350-metre vertical drop and the village's characteristic pyramid of pastel houses below. Reached on foot from Positano or by local bus.

5. Capo di Conca, Conca dei Marini — 100 m

The Saracen tower at the headland between Furore and Amalfi, with the fjord of Furore and the village of Conca dei Marini below. The view east takes in Atrani and Amalfi cathedral. Drive-in.

6. Belvedere Cimbrone Crypt, Ravello — 320 m

Lower terrace of Villa Cimbrone with a crypt-style stone gallery and a direct view down the cliff to Atrani. Inside the same garden complex as the Terrace of Infinity.

7. Punta Campanella from Termini — 156 m

The southernmost tip of the Sorrento peninsula, looking across the Bocca Piccola channel to Capri. One-hour hike from Termini village. The Roman ruins and lighthouse add to the cape's significance.

8. Convent of San Domenico, Praiano — 200 m

The whitewashed convent above Praiano, with the small marina of Marina di Praia directly below and the cliff coastline extending toward Positano. Steps from the SS163 coastal road.

9. Capo d'Orso, Maiori — 130 m

The lighthouse promontory between Maiori and Cetara, with views east along the coast toward Salerno and Vietri. Drive-up; small parking. Best at sunrise when the morning light comes off the sea.

10. Mount Faito, Lattari — 1,131 m

The high peak of the Lattari range above the Sorrento coast, reached by funicular from Castellammare di Stabia. The view encompasses both the Gulf of Naples (with Vesuvius across) and the Amalfi Coast to the south.
