Top 10 Viewpoints in Brazil

Brazil is too big for a single trip. The country contains coast, falls, sertão semi-arid plateau, Amazonian rainforest, and the high-arid Chapada Diamantina table mountains — and each has its own viewpoint tradition. The list below tries to spread the selection beyond the canonical Rio sites without ignoring them entirely.

1. Sugarloaf cable car, Rio de Janeiro

The cable car from Praia Vermelha rises in two stages: Morro da Urca then Pão de Açúcar at 396 m. The summit terrace gives the classic Rio panorama with Copacabana, Guanabara Bay, Christ the Redeemer and the surrounding mountains. Best at sunset.

2. Christ the Redeemer summit, Corcovado

The statue platform at 710 m gives a different Rio panorama — the south of the city, the lagoa, and the Atlantic. The platform itself is crowded; arrive early or come on a rainy afternoon.

3. Iguaçu Falls — Devil's Throat viewpoint

The walkway out over the Garganta del Diablo, the largest of the 275 waterfalls on the Brazil-Argentina border. The viewpoint puts the visitor a few metres above the lip of a 80 m drop. Spray and noise are part of the experience.

4. Pão de Açúcar from Praia Vermelha

The reverse-angle viewpoint: looking up at Sugarloaf from sea level on Praia Vermelha. The granite monolith framed by beach and Atlantic. Best in early morning before the cable car queues form.

5. Chapada Diamantina — Morro do Pai Inácio

The 1,120 m table mountain in central Bahia gives a panoramic view over the surrounding chapada — eroded sandstone tablelands with deep canyons. The hike up takes 30 minutes from the road. Sunset is the canonical time.

6. Ouro Preto from Morro de São Sebastião

The colonial mining town of Ouro Preto rises in a bowl of hills in Minas Gerais. The viewpoint at Morro de São Sebastião gives the canonical view of the baroque church-studded town. Best in afternoon light.

7. Pedra do Telégrafo, Rio de Janeiro

The cliff edge near Barra de Guaratiba west of Rio. The visual gag — visitors appear to dangle from a precipice — is achieved by perspective; the rock is actually a few feet above the ground. The genuine view inland and out to the Atlantic is also striking.

8. Lençóis Maranhenses — Lagoa Azul

The white-sand-dune-with-blue-freshwater-lagoons landscape in Maranhão state. The viewpoint at Lagoa Azul during the rainy-season lagoon phase (June-September) shows the canonical photograph.

9. Olinda — from the Alto da Sé

The colonial town of Olinda above Recife, with the viewpoint at the Alto da Sé giving a panorama over the painted hill town and out to the Atlantic. Sunset with carnival rehearsal is classic.

10. Brasília — TV tower viewpoint

The mid-twentieth-century capital from above shows Lúcio Costa's airplane-shaped urban plan particularly clearly. The viewing platform on the TV tower (75 m) gives the canonical Brasília aerial perspective.

Distances and the practical itinerary

Brazil is bigger than mainland Europe. Inter-city flights are essential; Rio-Iguaçu-Salvador-Brasília-Manaus all need flights between them. Most viewpoints are best within an itinerary of 14-21 days.
